Background facts:

Jefferies is one of the oldest and best-known companies which made tennis racquets well before the Turn of the 20th century. The exhibit is mentioned by our friend Siegfried Kuebler in his "Book of Tennis Rackets": "Fantail, Jefferies. On racquet with capital letters J and E. Finely combed Fantail grip, convex heart, 14 oz., Jefferies, London. Estimated 1893."  The fantail handle was introduced in order to give the player a better grip avoiding slipping off.
