Scanno

1555 (replica)

The oldest authoritative treatise on ball games known to us was written by Antonio Scaino, an Italian priest and doctor of theology. It was published in Venice at the House of Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari and Brothers in 1555. In this book, Scaino describes various ball games which were played with the open hand, with a protected fist, wich a racquet, and wich a so-called SCANNO, a flat wooden bat similar to an ordinary board but specially shaped. Below a reconstruction of the Scanno which was strung diagonally.
