John McEnroe called Sep 17, 1994, the saddest day of his life. The news of the death of his friend and former world-class player Vitas Gerulaitis just shook the tennis world. Gerulaitis was one of the great players of the rebellious 70's. In 1977, he won the Australian Open being finalist in Wimbledon the same year. Finalist of the US Open 1979, finalist in the French Open, 1980. He reached his highest ranking in the world rankings in 1978 with number 3. He died at the age of 40 in a friend's house on Long Island suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a malfunction in the air conditioning system.
