Gebr. Hammer started to produce tennis rackets in 1910. The company had a reputation already for making hayforks from ash-wood for farmers. The ash for their rackets was cut in the southern part of the Black Forest not far from the town of Freiburg. Only the best grown trunks were chosen. The throat-piece or wedge, however, was made of cherry wood, walnut, or hickory. Sometimes also beech was used.
