Background facts:

The oldest authoritative treatise on ball games known to us was written by Antonio Scaino, an Italian priest and doctor of theology who served as secretary to Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. Published in Venice in 1555 by the House of Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari and Brothers, the book describes various ball games played with the open hand, a protected fist, and the historic racquet.

The Scanno featured an extended wooden surface, reminiscent of late 19th-century frames, and was strung in a diagonal pattern. The Berlin Tennis Gallery brings this historic piece to life for its visitors, showcasing its unique design and craftsmanship.
