Background facts:

Gradidge & Sons was a British manufacturer specializing in lawn tennis equipment and became renowned for its innovative approach to handle design, introducing distinctive shapes such as the fantail grip, characterized by a flared, fan-like profile. Founded in 1870 by Harry Gradidge, the company operated from Artillery Place, Woolwich, S.E.18, England, and earned a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship. In addition to tennis rackets, Gradidge produced cricket bats, squash and badminton rackets, and balls for various sports, establishing itself as a leading name in late Victorian and Edwardian sporting goods through its commitment to experimentation and design innovation.

The racquet, a special model by Gradidge dating from the 1890s, features a convex wedge, reinforced shoulders, and a finely scored fantail handle. Such grips and handle designs were highly popular between 1885 and 1910, with some examples remaining in production until about 1930. This particular piece was sold at Christie’s on June 21, 1996, and represents an era when craftsmanship and technical refinement defined the evolution of lawn tennis equipment.

By 1890, the company was referred to as H. Gradidge and continued to expand its range of sporting requisites. In 1931, Gradidge was incorporated into the Slazenger group, forming part of the combined entity Slazenger, Sykes, Gradidge and Ayres.
